Day after day I sit here wondering if anyone will post something really
cool. Some days they do, some days they don't.

But then I thought, hey, instead of waiting for someone else to do something
cool, why don't you get off your *** and do something cool yourself!

So...

This has taken me all day to put together. Hardly seems worth it, does it?
The plasma is ok, but the solid surfaces are the wrong colours -
individually nice, but they clash too much. The floor and roof look boring.
The scale is just plain wrong. (The green ball in the center is 10 meters
across - doesn't look it!) And I can't get the lighting right at all! What
do other folks think? (I'm probably gonna do several different views so
people can see all of it...)

Andrew.

Andrew, please see your image in attached .jpg format. The filesize for this
image is ok for this group, 600+ isn't. Why is it that you can't produce your
images in the .jpg format? Many people, (including myself), still have dial-up and
it takes some time to download, so consequently, some won't even try to download
it.

    Sad but true I'm afraid...

Anyway, I see that you have put a lot of work into this, commendable just for
the effort. Technically, I can't comment on it overall, but I like what I see.
Your enthusiasm is pleasing.

     ~Steve~

Also try testing different programs and compression settings. The attached JPEG
uses progressive encoding, is more than 25KB smaller than Steves but shows a
better quality with less artefacts.
And BTW most programs are also able to get a higher compression ratio for
PNG images as POV does, and almost every program can produce smaller
PNG files than Photoshop.

While your efforts to safe people with dial-up connections (like me)
valuable time are well taken, I would recommend that you stop posting the
same image over and over again! Please! I count some 1 Meg for this image
already ...

Oh, so you downloaded the same file-name 3 times then? Silly.

You might want to take a peek at this site (both the linked image and the
rest of the thing) for some info (and confirmation that your colours aren't
that far off)
http://www.jet.efda.org/images/gallery/pages/85-1791med_jpg.htm
check out the guy in the foreground for scale. IIRC JET is ~11m tall.

Question: what's with those shades of orange/blue that they use
on stuff like that? They also have bunch of stuff at FermiLab
in those colours.

That's because POV writes the image line by line, while conversion
programs write it out as a single chunk. The compression in the latter
case is higher because the dictionary is common for the whole image.

Sorry sorry sorry... I keep forgetting to convert the thing to JPG... I'm
really annoyed with myself about that... *sigh* Oh well, try to remember
next time... (Btw, I also have dialup.)

Well, at least someone likes the image...

Andrew.

Oh, and how should I know that it's the same file and not something
earth-shattering new? As your subject-line does not implement that it's the
same file, I thought you might have some "Plasma machine" yourself to show.

Besides, OE does not allow me to download just your text and not the
attachment. That might be OE fault, but that's another story. So I had the
choice to ignore your post (I don't think that would have been good), or to
take it the way it is.

Why don't you post URL's to those "teaching examples"? Silly.

Marc-Hendrik
