I was never fully satisfied with my entry for the "Fantasy and Mystic" round
back in 2001. So here is a reworked version with improved level of detail in
the plant coverage of the background hills and some focal blurring added. In
my view this version is better, but not yet optimal. Hop you like it anyway.
Regards, Christoph

The detail on the little islands (not counting the background) is amazing;
especially the grass and shrubs.

Overall, the image really is quite lifelike. Some colors look a bit off, and
perhaps the background could be a little more detailed, but it's really
good.

Love images like this - the more you look the more you see - excellent work!

I can't remember having seen the previous version but I like
this one.
Very green. Nice jungle atmosphere, with the trees, plants but
also the birds.

The proportions seem off; either the leaves of the foreground trees and
bushes are two feet long, or the girl in the boat is three feet tall. I
really like the composition though, so I think you should scale back the
leaf sizes. Nice!

Your comment is absolutely correct. However, in order to scale down the
leaves I would have to increase the recursion level for the trees by one or
two units (they are made with Gill Tran's MakeTree macro). This would
dramatically increase the memory usage for this scene which is already at
the limit for my 500 MB RAM. I see only two solutions for this problem,
either buy a new PC with more memory or completely rebuild the whole scene
using mesh plants instead of CSG plants. Fortunately in the mean time there
is a good and afordable tool to make mesh trees, the Forester Arboretrum by
Stephen Dartnall.

Or you can modify maketree to generate meshes. ;-)

Hey, great image, I quite like overall life sense.
I have no trouble with leaves scale as it is a fantasy image and the girl
can be an elfe or the trees of an inknown specie.
I just find focal blur kind of overdone.
Great work anyway

I do like it, very much so!!
It would be great with an animation...
What is the sky made of?

It's a real keeper.. another one for my harddisk!

Good idea, I didn't think about that. But unfortunately this is beyond my
poor mathematical skills. Replacing CSG spheres and cones with mesh objects
is one thing but removing all the invisible and redundant triangles and make
a smooth mesh is a completely other story. At least for me...
