Just a quick test.

Well, finally I decided to reproduce "The Musical Lesson" and
yesterday I did spend some time in our local museum 'cause  it
has a huge section with historical music instruments. Indeed there
was also one virginals by Andries Ruckers, a 17th century
manufactur from Antwerpen.
I did use this one (together with what can be seen in the painting)
to create the simplified model for my reproduction of the painting.
But now I'm not sure if it is too simple. In the final image it will not
be seen as close as in this quick test render, but somehow I'm
not sure if I do like the look of the instrument.
So what do you think?

Oh, and the chair. I did use Gilles Vermeer-style-chair (thanks
a lot) but it is heavily moified to get the look of the chair in the
painting. And the lion heads are added.

And note that no specular or phong highlights are used. The final
image will only be lit by radiosity (so specular does not make any
sense).

   Well, I think it's very nice, and I can see a good image developing
here.

    My only criticisms?  I think the chair should be either taller (I
don't know the style of this chair proportionally), or say, 10-15%
bigger, it looks low to me, but then I might be totally wrong about
this.

   Hinges on the folding parts of the instrument?

Looks great.  The keys' color seems odd, though I see it is a half tone 
in a reference photo. It looked to be the same overall hue as the 
painting however.

Yes, I think the proportion of the chair compared to the instrument
is one of the things that did irritate me. But I have checked all
dimensions again and they seem to be right. The virginals has
to be played while *standing* in front of it, so the keys are higher
as with a contemporary piano. Maybe our mind is so much used
to think in *known* dimensions that we see the chair very small
when there is nothing else (like a person) in the scene to get
a scale.

Oh yes. To get the right hue and saturation for the textures is a big problem.
Sometimes it looks very good while modelling and doing the textures but
when used with radiosity it looks rather odd. But it is a very interesting
experience not to use *absolute* color values but thinking like "oh, there
is a dark red rug at the left, so the color value for the viol must be more
greenish to get that light brown..."
