Folks:

I have been experimenting with some of the new POV 3.5 features
and I have come up with this image.  I started out trying to get
some realistic-looking water using height_field and the bozo pattern
as an internal bitmap.  I never got a truly realistic appearance, but
I did get something attractive out of it.  I was also able to make my
first image that did not use the default aspect ratio.  This one
is 2:1 instead of 4:3.

I too have been trying to come up with ways of making realistic water. I
think you have done a great job in creating small wavelets. My suggestion
on the texture would be to give the height field a semi transparent grey
texture and then place a darker blue or green plane below it.

For more rough sea, try  inverted granite pattern at large scale. It causes
'sharper' waves.

Nice, but too bright IMO, apart from that using a heightfield for an
infinite water plane is usually not such a good idea.

Hmm ...

I was wondering.  The height_field is exactly the smallest size
necessary to give the illusion of an infinite water plane, but it is,
of course, not infinite.

Is there a better strategy?

PhotoShop. I think it improves too. Please see:

Hmm ...

I see what you mean.  I think that the reason it looked so bright was
because you are seeing the scene through a ground fog, which
brightened things up a bit ...
