Needed another render of the 3com network card I did ages ago, this time
with focal blur, 2 area lights and a touch of rad. tweaked the scene
slightly and altered a lot of the settings for 3.5 (old was done with MP)

damn thing ate up over 200MB of ram and took 5 hours to render, weird thing
being the ram usage without rad, or without focal blur was only around 50MB,
and the render time was typically under 15minutes for either. yet putting
the 2 together and it nearly choked.

greate :) I would be shure that this is a foto, maybe except whie
background and shadow - they are too 'nice'

I looked at the picture before reading the text and was like "why is this
guy posting a picture of his processor?" Then I read the text.

So, well done. =)

I'm not really into the extreme realism thing and the subject of
your image isn't really something I dream about either but I
have to admit: the image is amazing.
You could easily convince me that this is a photograph. It
really isn't, is it?

Holy crap! If you had better focal blur (and maybe slightly less of it)
this would be photorealistic...

I have to say that this is a very impressive image. I have some questions
about your dust and damage algorithms. Source code would be very nice for them.
Her are the areas that impress me most about the image.
Note area A where there is apparently a small fiber on the card. This is a
realistic detail that I have observed on many cards, and might be a tiny strand
of wire or a bit of lint fiber off something. Did you model it as an image map,
a sphere sweep, or a spline?
In area B I see some small particles of dust. Nice random placement. Once
again, is this a macro that puts the dust on it or is it an image map?
In area C there is static attached dust as many ICs (having epoxy cases)
tend to attract. Extremely well modeled and placed. It's of course the small
things that count in making an image photorealistic, and the first indication
that something is CG is often the absolute lack (or artificial appearance of)
real world markings and dirt. Your dirty algorithms are like the icing on the
cake and would be worth seeing the source code for.
In area D you have included a very realistic marking that would be produced
by using a tool to pry an integrated circuit out of its socket. Is this a
surface map that alters the normal of the plastic socket or did you actually
model the dents into the socket itself?
Waiting for your replies, as I am sure to learn something from your
technique.

Cheers!

I am really in trouble to believe that this is NOT A PHOTO
so long I did not see the source and render it myself.

Call me Thomas if you want :-).

the IC-Socket loocks too realistic. I can't believe someone can take so much
time and put it in Polygons together. Can you render it with your name on
the chip ? :-)
