One more WIP (hope the last): I changed the sunligh color, the interior
light placement, the hf-wall pattern, and the barrel. The window woods
where replaced by isosurfaces, and screws were added. Some metals are a bit
less reflective. Oh! ...and the radiosity settings have a bit more of
quality.
I'm interested about your opinion on the new light placement. The
sunlight from the window seems nicely placed, but I can't decide about the
interior incandescent: in this scene it is at the left, more or less
perpendicular to the sun, but on the prior WIP it was at the right, much
more opposed to the sunlight. What do you think?

Everything looks great except the barrel. Something about it looks flat.
I especially like the texture on the scale.

I just noticed I posted my response 4 minutes before you posted the image.
Must've become unstuck in time again.

I agree with this opinion.

Yes, I think the shadows are too "long", falling too far down
the wood. Is it a light shining down from the ceiling?

Yep... the barrel is flat. Even the lower hoop doesn't give it any bulge.
Both the hoops seem to be painted on.

I think that is intended to be colour leaching from the rings due to rain,
but it does look like shadows.

This is what I first noticed, too. Give the metal hoops some thickness.
Also, shouldn't the barrel be made of multiple vertical boards?

I like the wall much, much more now, and the wicker basket seems to have
more form. Perhaps the apples lost just a touch of volumn? Very slight
if so. ( There is an odd moment, compositionally, where the shadow
falling across an apple on top is coincident with the hoop of the barrel
behind ).

Render at print resolution, send to magazines, get some publicity.
