Hi
Good start, never saw Discovery orbiting around Earth, now we can :)
There is something wrong with atmosphere at the horizon: this edge
Is it your media density or cloud layer? I can't say but I suspect clouds
BTW I'd rather see a more dense atmospere

Perhaps Jupiter would be more appropriate for the proposed subject. :-)
Nice work for a WIP, but some media on the atmosphere and better
texturing and lighting would definitely help.
I'd definitely like to see your progress on this.

It's Earth because I wanted to show off the 21600 x 10800 image map
of Earth I've got.

The atmosphere has two parts, a media-filled sphere that's the
blue glow, and a media-filled sphere with a cloud texture that's
the clouds, which I heavily altered to make the surface more
visible. See comment above. The Discovery and EVA pod are
just there to add interest; the real focus I haven't planned
a design for the overall ship yet.

Hey, we have 2002 meanwhile, but early last year I also couldn't resist...
-Ive
P.S. at this time I did own a Pentium 200MHz with 32MB so it took forever to
render

Yeah, I noticed the detail (Great Lakes and all). Very good texture indeed.

Yeah, I noticed the use of media, but if you want to get a more
realistic look you'll have to insert some randomness on the media, and
also work on the reflectivity and finish of Earth's surface as seen from
space. As I said, it shows great promise and I'm sure you'll end up with
an outstanding image when it's all ready.
If only I had some links for Earth pictures from orbit...
Regards!

It was either that or a Cobra Mk. III, but the .raw
file of the Cobra doesn't render properly for some
reason. I need some ideas for my own ship.

I found some here:
http://images.jsc.nasa.gov/images/pao/GT4/10074016.jpg
http://images.jsc.nasa.gov/images/pao/STS64/20163222.jpg
http://ails.arc.nasa.gov/Images/Astrobiology/jpegs/AC91-2008_a.jpeg
Note how thin the atmosphere layer looks, and that there is practically
no stars visible.

I think he was referring to the titel of the film '2001 - A Space
Odissey'. Just my 2 eurocent.
P.S. Good modelling btw. Maybe the texture it's a bit to white. It's
hard to see the details...
