Hi,

In 1996 I published Texture Library (http://texlib.povray.org/) and had
maintained it for two years. After starting my first job I did not find any
time to improve or update it. Now the time has come to do it.

First of all I need a good texture demonstration scene. It should show the
texture in different usage scenarios. Please see the attached image. It
contains:

1) texture on a complex object
2) reflection test
3) texture rotation test
4) look-through test
5) scaling test

What do you think? Is the image too complex? Should I create an own scene
for the the look-through test?

Bye,
Rene

There could be some new povray logo.
Perhaps there could be optional microgeometry (displaced surface) also.

Although I like the basic idea, it is a bit confusing to look at with
the different tests overlapping, as they do. Perhaps, if you simplified
it a bit. You could remove one of the complex objects, and redesign the
reflection test. Maybe a flat box with only three rods on it, in the
primary colours, would give the same information.

I think it looks good, but at least as important as the appearance on
different geometries is how it looks under various lighting setups - dim
indoor lighting, strong sunlight, pure radiosity lighting, ... Most
standard textures from 'textures.inc' for example are not suited for use
with radiosity since they contain ambient finish.

So i would prefer a simpler scene but in several versions for different
lighings.

As far as the complexity of the scene goes, I think it's just about
right, a couple of points though (well, 3) :

reflection test - I take the coloured cylinders are just place-holders for
the moment, and will have differing amount of reflection, yes ?

texture rotation test - What are the different rotations on each
half-cylinder - (it's hard to tell from your sample image) - are they,
un-rotated, x-rotation, y-rotation & z-rotation or differing degrees of
rotation round a single axis ?

scaling test - I would put in a couple more spheres at more clearly defined
scaling factors - maybe 5 in total with 1/4x, 1/2x, 1x, 2x, 4x or maybe,
even, a larger spread...

Hi,

thanks a lot for the comments. My next step are going to be:

1) Simplification of this scene to be a complete nice looking demo scene,
nothing special. Just the texture on various objects, including a reflection
test.
2) Separate scaling test image, e.g. five spheres
3) Rotation test test image, e.g. five boxes
4) Lighting test image, e.g. colored spotlights
5) Optional: a radiosity test scene, but I do not expect any advantages from
such a scene because radiosity highly depends on the scene itself and not on
one texture

Maybe 2) and 3) could be one image, we will see.

Thanks, more drafts are coming soon,
Rene

I'd rather use light groups.

That does not matter IMO, a test with radiosity would be very useful for
everyone who wants to use the texture for that purpose. A radiosity only
scene (no light sources) with an ambient sky and with geometry to generate
reasonable contrasts would be sufficient.

You might also want to consider using one of several scenes depending on
the type of texture being demonstrated. The optimal scene to display a
rock texture will be very different than what would be good for a water
texture or for a slope dependent landscape texture.

Sure. This type of scene is only intended for non-transparent, non-bumpy
ones.

No advice at the moment, just wanted to say it's good to hear this is going
to be updated. I use the program on occasion and have been waiting for an
update.
