Thanks to the suggestion by ABX, I managed to get this traced in only
12h. Final version will be rendered at 800x600, with more blur_samples.
Some new details:
+ The barrel is now done with sections of a spherical mesh done with
HF_Sphere() macro. Traces very fast, specially compared with the previous
isosurface.
+ The radiosity is loaded from a file that was saved with a simplified
version of this scene. The rad settings to generate that file were HQ, but
the image size used was only 80x60! The artifacts have disappeared or
integrated well on the image: can you see them? ;)
+ I flipped the image as it seems a bit more appealing to me, perhaps
because the window in my room is placed at left of the monitor.
There are still missing features: basket handles, better rusted metal for
the barrel rings, better wood on the window, and perhaps the addition of
some small objects on the table. Suggestions are welcome, you know...

I hate to say this, but it may render faster, but it doesn't look as
good, imo.

Jaime,
Wow! This looks great. Perhaps a little discoloration of the barrel wood above and
below the 'rusted' barrel rings.

The light coming from outside seems awfully cold. Normally I would
expect reflected sunlight from objects outside the window to contribute
a little more warmth than this.
You might put a couple screws/nails/some kind of fasteners in the window
wood (or not, if it's glued or fastened from the other side, but it
would add detail).
The barrel rings definitely don't look like rusted metal to me. I'm
going to assume that they're made of iron or some kind of cheap, dull
steel, so I'll suggest that they should probably appear kind of a dark
dull brownish-red, with just a hint of roughness; this is usually how
those metals look before the distinctive bright reddish-orange colors
set in.
For the record, the metal texture on that scale is REALLY nice.

aren't barrels like that made from +/- 10cm wide (4 inches) wooden strips?
not sure about that, but I don't really find the barrel very realistic at
the moment (not taking textures into account)
it seems to be early in the morning (?) so maybe the light should be a
little bit more reddish?
love it though...

Jaime:
This looks really great, as usual. :)
Am I right in thinking that the table top uses Christoph's IsoWood include?
I have to say that I am with the others in noticing that there is something
missing with the barrel. To me, it looks like the surface is a little too
uniform to truly look like the real thing.
Otherwise ... awesome!

I'm really happy I could help with such great image.

Not only. There is a long tradition among the christian painters to have
the light above and from the left. As christians invades nearly
everywhere, it has become traditional lightning of most past artistic works.
It's mainly due also to the fact that to avoid being dazzled (*), the
painter has to turn its back to the sun, and in the north hemisphere
the sun is on the left the afternoon.
If you want to trigger a 'early morning' feeling, you put the light
low on the right, but the light is better later in the day...
*: as well as avoiding the representation of the sun, and the
contre-jour for the subject.

Hi all:
Many thanks for the good criticism to all:
Bill P.:
>Perhaps a little discoloration of the barrel wood above and below the
>'rusted' barrel rings.
I don't know what exactly happened to the barrel texture, but there are 4
layers, one of them corresponding to the effect you mention. On the tests
it showed up very well, but the effect has almost dispeared on that
render... but I don't know why!
Xplo:
>The light coming from outside seems awfully cold.
Ah! You got me... previously it was a fluorescent light, that's why it is
a bit greenish. I forgot to replace it with a sunlight color.
>You might put a couple screws/nails/some kind of fasteners in the window
Nice suggestion! I was searching for this kind of "little details"...
>The barrel rings definitely don't look like rusted metal to me. I'm
Good criticism again: will see what I can do.
Daan:
>aren't barrels like that made from +/- 10cm wide (4 inches) wooden strips?
Hmmm... I really don't know. I've done it without a concrete model, and
only looked at reference pics for the rings placement: I forgot to pay
attention to the strips size. Good detail! I will research a bit...
Aaron:
>Am I right in thinking that the table top uses Christoph's IsoWood include?
No, it's a heightfield. But the effect achieved it's nearly the same.
>missing with the barrel. To me, it looks like the surface is a little too
>uniform to truly look like the real thing.
Yes, the mesh deformation function needs more work to look like real wood
grain. I'm trying different patterns but it's a bit slow to test because I
must generate the mesh at the final resolution each time: the pattern can
look very different at lower triangle counts.
ABX:
>I'm really happy I could help with such great image.
At least you helped to keep in the barrel, that's sure! :)
>Grandmother with frilly dress ?
Hmmm... I was thinking only about the frilly dress or apron, as the
grandmother is beyond my povsibilities.
Le Forgeron:
>There is a long tradition among the christian painters to have
>the light above and from the left. As christians invades [...]
Great explanation... is somewhat scary to think that things you do
unconsciously, are really "guided" by cultural archetypes.
