Hi,
I know that rendering time is always different for each image but I was
still wondering how long raytracing ties up peoples computers for.
Thanks,

Hi, and welcome.
I think raytracing is the most demanding task for todays computers, and
shows in my opinion how primitive our computers are, compared to 'the
reality' that we try to copy in raytracing.. I love computers, anyway.. But
my patience stops after about 1 day of rendering.. It seems to me that very
few people have patience for more than this.. Many people, myself included,
can work on a project for months however.
By the way, the other newsgroups here, such as povray.general is especially
for asking general questions about raytracing without posting pictures.
Thanks,
Hugo

My patience stops when I find out that a not so succesful rendering is going
to take at least 1 week or so. Depends on how busy I am. If I'm busy doing
other things, rendering makes me feel good because that way I'm sure my
computer isn't wasting cpu cycles while it's consuming energy.

Do you think people would be prepared to pay a small amount, eg, USD $0.05
per hour spent raytracing? (Of course on a 2Ghz or faster machine, not a
286, lol).

It depends on the efficency. I think 2 Ghz is not enough. It also needs a
good interface between my computer and the cluster, so I can upload my
(eventually big) files, and not wait a day on a quere before my job starts.
