I stumbled over the first image at
http://www.cowderoy.com/graphics/pieces05.htm
and became inspired. I kept some design but changed the towers and the
layout of the board and came
up with the second image.

There is still alot of work to be done, like the radiosity setting that
I still struggle with.

Modelling done in Moray 3.3 and rendering in POV-Ray 3.1g. The total
rendering time
was about 70 minutes for the three different images on a 800 MHz AMD
with 384 Mb RAM.
The final composition was done in Photoshop.

Yours
Stefan

I can't wait to see the finished product. I looks really good.

One comment though, the black pieces are a little to black and kind of blend
together making them hard to distinguish from each other, you might try
lightening them just a tiny bit.

one hint: don't use rgb <0,0,0> if you're not sure, that you _really_
want _absolute_ black ...

...in reality rarely any object is rgb 0, so changing this color may
change the scene in a direction, more preferable ..

Yes, master. I will tweak it.;)
Thanks for the feedback.

The king and queen of each side should be in the same column. Check the
placement in the original image. You mixed up the white queen and king.

Nice chess set!

Maybe we should collect an archive of good chess sets in pov :)
I've got a model for a Mann Ray chess set (I posted that some
time ago... 2-4 months or something)...

The comments I have concern only texture: too shiny. Make it
rough, scratch'd, bumpy... something. This looks too clean.

and... what is the round thing? Clock button? Smoke-absorbing
ashtray?

Best,

Why not? But I use Moray.. soo.. ?

I'm working on it. Like people said here, RGB<0,0,0> is not
that good. They are a bit bumpy but it doesn't show very well
because of that.

Yes, it's a fast modelled ashtray in Bauhaus style. I remember it
from the Bauhuas museum in Berlin, but as I don't have any pics
of it right now I just made a quick model.

Hehehe.. My mistake. Thanks for pointing it out.
I just made a copy of the white pieces and rotated it.
I suppose that it's more obvious to someone who plays
chess.. ;)

Oops, also, there should be a black square in the lower-left corner, so the
board needs to be rotated 90 degrees. (your reference image is wrong here.)
Then make sure that the queens are on squares of their own color.
