Hadn't been raytracing as much as I'd like to lately so I tried something
that should be well known. I'd post a whole bunch of replies to other
people's messages in this group but most would simply be a echoing "Looks
great!".

My try at making the keyring was easy since it's 4 megapixel digital photos
of the front and back used as a height_field. A sloppy near final render is
attached because I had last minute changes and can't decide how to proceed
regarding the keyring standing as is now or laying down. Ended up shifting
the look_at point and neglected to also move the location of the camera, as
you will see if you check out the image. I'm just throwing it out for people
to see and critique if they want to.

Anyway, there's more reason to my posting than just that.

Firstly, I used CSG to create that key and set output to hf_gray_16 (png
format) so it would make for a good HF. Also used focal blur with the camera
too so it would be like heavy AA and smooth the edges. I noticed there were
speckles and rough edges in the lightest parts as seen in the preview window
but not in a paint program so there might still be some peculiarities when
doing that 16 bit gray. But I'd need to do much more checking before saying
that for sure.

Secondly, I can only get photons to show up half as well as I'd like them
to. Yep, that picture had reflecting photons for the emblem(s) and
refracting for the text object. In some previous renders without the key and
textured ground I could see a fairly well defined light pattern looking like
highly blurred copies of them. I chalk it up to my ongoing inexperience. If
anyone has know-how they'd like to share as to going about dimming and
brightening photons at will, while using varying textures, I'm sure everyone
else would be listening intently (me, for one).

TIA! just in case :-)

Hehe, looks very familiar. :)

I've attached a render I made of the keyring on November 24 2001. Note
that this was *before* the actual physical keyring had been produced.
Chris Cason needed a visualization of it.

By the way, if I remember correctly, the front design was made by
Tony[B], and the back design was made first as a draft by Fabien Mosen
and then refined by me.

A version of the attached image modified by Chris Cason is the one
displayed on povray.org.

Sorry, no advise on photons...
