Here is my attempt at a realistic render. I'm not satisfied with it yet.
I'd like to improve the paper's texture and get rid of the jaggies on the
black stripe (look at the cyan crayon - it doesn't show as much once I
converted to jpeg).

I also don't have any crayons to base my model on, so it's all from very
small samples on their website.

I think I'll try to convert it to IsoCSG to get better normals and textures.

For best effect, stand back about 1 meter from your screen. :)

Info for the curious: uses 2 area lights, radiosity and focal blur -
rendered in 2h 44m on a PII450.

Enjoy,
Richard.

If possible, try to make a procedural texture using the 'object' pattern
(POV 3.5) rather than an image map for the crayon paper. I often prefer to
use this method instead of image maps wherever possible. If you can do this
you should be able to improve upon the look (and virtually remove the
jaggies) of the paper.

Also, are you using an ambient value other than 0 in the paper pigment? (To
me) this often hinders the realism of the image, making objects appear to
'glow' somewhat. I prefer to use zero for ambient, and tweak the diffuse
property for radiosity.

I think it's looking great! Maybe you should randomize a little the
positions of the crayons, so they don't look so perfectly placed.

Also, it seems as if some colors have too much ambient, I don't know if I'm
mistaken.

Fernando.

Very convincing! I can practically smell them :) I for one think the
black jaggies are realistic. Crayola always used rough paper for the
wrappers, making the print not-so-perfect. I think the whole scene looks
very close to real life, except for one thing: the yellow crayon is a
little too bright, IMO. It might be the way I have my monitor adjusted
though. Good work!

I'll give it a try. I was trying make some paper fibers, but it's too small
to see right now.
Currently, the paper is made from two layered textures. The black stripe
which comes from an image map and the rest which is a crackle pattern.

Nope. Globally set to 0. I kept the diffuse at default values. I'll try
to fiddle with it a bit. Upon closer inspection, I see what you mean by
'glow'. I fixed it by dropping the diffuse value, but increasing the
brightness a bit.

Thanks for your advice,
Richard.

Try using the 'brilliance' keyword as well.
