Relax, he's more scared of you than you are of him.

This is almost done. I thought I'd ask for opinions, comments and
suggestions before fixing up the media sampling (notice the bad interaction
between the two containers) and rerendering.

Clouds are made with almost exactly the same method as gilles tran's fast
clouds.

I love it. Very eerie. Only one suggestion, maybe the
iris could be a more complex pattern, and also the
spots on the alien. There is a contrast between the
realism of the landscape and the detail of the alien.
That may be intentional, in which case I'm just full
of crap again ;-)

Very reminiscent of the kind of cover art you would have found on the old
scifi pulp mags. Looks cool. One thing..l the cracks in the ground look
kinda of fake. More like an image_map than a bump or true cracking. You
might want to adjust them, making them a bit deeper, or adjust the lighting.

I agree about the cracks. They look too deep to be bump mapped. Scaling them
down would make them look not so deep and you could get away with the bump
map easier.

I also think you need some kinda structure where the green gas is escaping.
Something like a small fissure?

Oh and with all that green gas escaping I think it would be cool if the
coulds had some green swirled in. Maybe even other colors. It would make it
feel more like a different planet to me.

Is that smoke coming up from the creature, or a darker cloud? The white
clouds look very good!

The light on the creature suggests there's a strong light close to the
cameraman, what could it be?

But the clouds don't light up the ground as much as I would expect even on
an alien planet (if the laws of physics are the same).. On the other hand,
it will wash out the contrast in this scene, if you reduce the shadows.. So
realism probably won't be good here. The ground texture would have to be
substancially different.. Never mind, the balance of light between the
ground and clouds are right.

Those are great clouds. One thing the alien needs, since he seem to be
smart, he needs a backpack or something indicating he's part of an
intelligent species. Or does he just look smart?

I agree with both of you. I just found that this is partly caused by a
problem with normal accuracy (bug posted to p.b-t, go confirm it for me if
it's really a bug =) ), so I'm using a workaround now and working on
improving the normal. Hopefully it'll be better next time around.

Actually, there is, but it just looks like a shadow =) I might work that
into the function of the ground itself rather than using a prism cut out of
the ground, since that obviously looks unrealistic.

Hmm... actually, the clouds are about 900 units above the smoke (to give you
a sense of scale, the tallest landform is four units large) =) but I'll
consider that.

Thanks both of you =)

I guess I see what you mean. Yeah, I'll try to increase the detail,
especially on the eye. Thanks for mentioning that.

It's coming out of a fissure in the ground in the distance. The clouds, as I
said, are everything but cut and pasted from gilles tran's code, so thanks
to him =)

So

Yeah, I'll probably put some slight radiosity in the final version, though I
might tone down the sky, save the rad data, and then bring it up, using the
saved data.

Thanks to Gilles Tran =)

I'm thinking it's the latter =) I really like him, I think I'll try to
animate him after I'm done with this.
