This is an image which I put down for a bit not too long ago and now plan on
resuming. Suggestions?

Nice images, but I've got some suggestions (as requested):

1. The waves look a little too small, it ruins the scale of the ocean when
looking at the shore.
2. While we're at the shore: how about adding some foam and splashes,
even just texturing would be an enhancement.
3. Make the clouds stand out a little more, IMO they're too washed out.
4. Add some more differences in the coloring of the trees, IMHO there
should be some more shades of green.
5. Work a little on the texture for rock and grass, and perhaps increase the
grass a little...
6. Perhaps some doves?

What program did use for that heightfield? Reminds me of that old DOS
program Terrain Maker, fun stuff. If not foam like Tim suggested, how about
you make the water into a media for a coastal shallowing affect. The water
in the distance can revert back to an opaque plane to save on render time.
More vegetation types?

Others have given good suggestions which I won't repeat, but the islands
seem REALLY dark given the lighting suggested by the sky. If you have a
light_source for a sun, crank that puppy up! Or increase the diffuse in
your textures, or something, but playing with the sun seems to be the
easiest way...

On that note, are you using radiosity (I'm guessing no)? Even the crappy
stuff (say, count 30, error_bound 1, recursion_limit 1 or 2) would
provide a good "ambient" effect without washing everything out like
ambient does, and help brighten up the islands as well.

One other thing: the water just looks WEIRD. No highlighting at all in
the foreground, and weak reflection from the islands, and yet, at the
horizon it's actually brighter than the sky?
