The year is 3049, and this is the Planet Carrier 'PC-1012'.
It's the ultimate Spacecraft. Inside it, Earth.
It has its own inbuilt gravity mechanism which holds the Earth central.
It can move anywhere in the Universe.
It even has its own 'rain' mechanism, the craft being able to tell which piece of land
needs rain next or the most. The craft itself
is just one big commune, holding 175 million working people at any one time, while on
Earth, the other 3billion people work and
relax in a much better atmosphere compared to a thousand years ago.
( ...have I sold it yet? ;)
Ok, I think I'm going to make this an ongoing project but I don't want gold as the
texture, I think it needs a nice dark metallic
finish for the craft as I intend to put rows of windows/lights along each beam to
highlight the overall shape (gulp...scaling and
positioning will be hard).
What finish would that be? Any ideas?

So, you're implying that in about 1000 years, we will have found the way to
get rid of, at least, 3 billion people...

Well that will of course be AFTER the revolution!

:) Glad you like it. I want to give every indication of life and movement as I can
inside the ship, but not with a gold texture.

I did have it at 9 billion and then changed it to 3, but quite possibly.
You die at 30yrs old and float off into the atmosphere.

Why bother dragging a planet around? Just make a big ring, spin it for
gravity, and hold a ball of plasma in the center as an artificial sun.
Use directed beams of ions from the plasma ball as thrust. With the
amount of material used in that structure, you will have something much
more mobile and with more capacity, you could easily make its surface
area larger than that of the Earth itself.
Or just adjust a few planetary orbits and take the whole solar system
with you.

If you bring the planet then you don't have to pack.

I really like the idea behind this pic but not a big fan of the pic itself.
I think if we were gonna haul a planet around we'd pick one that was much
prettier than a gas giant. I'm thinking dark greens and blues. No atmosphere
either because the ship takes care of that. Also, where is the propulsion?

Sounds pretty! Can't wait! How much are tickets?

I just remembered where I had read something related to your raytracing.
READ this, I think you'll find it as frightening as interesting:
