Heres a neat little toy I coded up to try out the pigment functions.
This builds a matrix of spheres, each one set to a different radius
depending on what
the pigment pattern used as a function evaluates to at that point in the
matrix.
Pretty much a 3d sculpture of the inner details of the pigment patterns.
This
image shows the crackle pattern in action. Took my Athlon 1.4 ghz about 40
minutes to parse and render over 1.2 million spheres, with reflections. So
beware of the max_rad setting in the source =)

That's interesting. I would be interested in seeing the source for your
"toy." If you wanted to really hurt your CPU, you could try this with blob
components.
