Up late, tinkering around, came up with this- not perfect by a long
shot, but a nice effect.  Come to think of it, somebody is sure to have done
this already and posted it here.  Oh, well.

    When mine was at about that stage, I made it much more realistic by
simply going from a larger crackle at the horizon to a very small one at the
poles. I think I enclosed the texture in a gradient and unevenly scaled it
so that the blocks got longer at the equator too...

That's not a bad idea. I do want the blocks small enough to be sort of
realistic, but I also want to add a few lava fountains and some more
atmosphere effects.
