Look like you found the right way of measuring objects 
to generate models. Just make the model and put some 
graph paper on it. Oh no, that does not work, I am 
afraid I still have to do it the hard way next time :)

Nice pucture though. Do I understand correct and does the
object disappear (apart from shadows) when viewed from
the X, Y or Z direction?
