Addressing some of the very helpful comments so far (thanks), here's a
softer texture: little bit of scattering media and a "detector" light of to
the right side. The rendering is without aa (although I used photoshop to
decrease the size of the image and get a little filtering in there).

very nice, the texture looks great now. All you need is a background to
complete it - SEM images don't have such a black bg do they?

How does that texture look on other things (Poser figures, etc)?

I'll post the texture as I have it now to p.b.sf. Still needs some tweaking,
especially for other shapes--not a very robust texture.

I will do what i can.. Like i said i still need to figure out what kind of
creature to model and begin that process before i use the texture... Of course
by looking at SEM pictures online i can see i will need several textures to
model a complex life form... Its somewhere to start... Texturing is not my
forte... =]

BTW do you have any good sites i can brows foe SEM images of micro life
forms... I have found several sites but its hard to find a full picture of a
creature... Mostly heads, legs, and such...

and thanks for posting the tex or whatever help you might be able to give =]

Have never seen an image like this "in person," but from pictures I've seen
this looks very real.
This would look cool with a table and chairs set up on the top of one of the
neurons

ONE MORE THING... =]

can you also post the original "un kind" texture... i use mega pov and it looks
nothing like this neuron... way too subtle... =/ i will try to make some changes
i think it os due to the syntax of the slope but i am not sure yet... ??

here are the differences:
1st image original 3.5 tex
2nd image mega pov tex (had to edit the slope to work?)

Pretty much the only changes were the addition of media, decreased the size
of the bump map, and added the back and side lights.
