Here is an update on the robot hand that I started a while ago...

I've changed the way the palm is modelled, and added some bits from my
electronics.inc

Having put the model inside a "real" scene (my shed, see web), the textures
have really improved, although they are still extremely basic
pigments-with-a-bit-of-reflection.

I've just noticed that a couple of the objects are floating a bit, and the
heel of the hand needs to come down, but anyway...

Is that an opposable thumb I can see? What about length conservation on
your spline-wires, is that sorted? If you can adapt the string code at
http://www.esite-host.com/~rocketmg/ for use in animations, it might be
helpful (some of the cloth animators in p.b.a can probably help you with
this, since cloths are 2D analogues of strings...)
I look forward to your completed scene, hopefully with more robot
bits...

Thanks - It certainly is an opposable thumb, in fact all the fingers can be
wiggled around, you never know when you might need to greet a Vulcan...

Length conservation is still handled in a bodge-it'n'leg-it fashion, I'm
planning to just stretch the control points a bit depending on the angle of
the bend.  (At the moment, it does nothing, as you can see from the image -
no loops)

Do to my unlimited materials budget building this robot, I have used
state-of-the-art, next-generation, memoryform shape-changing liquid metal.
That's probably how it will stay until I get hold of some old-fashioned wire
to make the fingers go...

instead of liquid metal.  Your solution looks much neater and is less likely
to get snagged on passing objects.

I will see if the patron wants to spring for a retrofit.  How much does

As I'm sure you can imagine, state-of-the-art, next-generation, memoryform
shape-changing liquid metal is so cheap it's just not funny any more - it's
the machine for making it that costs the mega-bucks...(You can find a
sneak-preview of this device on the back of the robot hand)

I may be able to persuade the client to swap a state-of-the-art,
next-generation, memoryform shape-changing liquid metal manufacturing system
for some of your rubber tubing - the robot made out of state-of-the-art,
next-generation, memoryform shape-changing liquid metal is having trouble
blending in to more mundane surroundings.

simulation. I am working on some string macros myself that will do what you want,
but the code is far from release. I'll get an anim together and post it later in
the week if you like.

That would be great, thanks.  I think that is probably beyond my current
POV/maths skills - I'm having to re-learn stuff I forgot years ago...

I'm working on an IK method of positioning the fingers at the moment, so I
haven't really got time to do string stuff as well!
