I am relative new to POV (just downloaded it 3 weeks ago) This is the
very first scene I created hoping to get a feel for the basics of
raytracing.

The brain model was taken from
http://astronomy.swin.edu.au/pbourke/modelling/cortex/index.html (hat
to convert it to pov-format), everything else is my work.

I would love to play around with radiosity here, but I guess it would
take me weeks of rendering to find some good parameters on my PIII500
:(

Any critics / suggestions from the pros would be welcome.

Hey nice work, especially since you're so new to pov! I sure couldn't do
anything like this, during the first years!  The floppy disk looks pretty
precise and detailed.. Did you use measures from the real ones?  I didn't
measure things during my first Pov years..

I wish you'd give away the floppy model, so I wouldn't have to code one
myself.. Really..

Yep, the disk is mesured up to the 10th of a millimeter :) Was
really fun,
you find details you never ever noticed on a floppy before...

Well, I need to work a little bit on the code (was the first
thing I
modelled for the scene) as well as translate the comments to
english, but I
think I'm going to post it to p.b.s-f within the next few days...

Even the labels? Wow, I probably would have had trouble aligning
everything that well in MY first image (it was a long time a go now, so
I can't really remember)

Ah, you're obviously a new guy if a week seems like a long time to wait
for one image...

I wouldn't call myself a pro, but here goes;

+ Your modelling skill is uncanny for a newcomer, but a few extra
details (bolts, etc) on the shelves would add to the realism a bit.
+ Glass texture is ok at first glance, but on closer inspection it's a
bit plasticky. Try fiddling with ior value, and maybe adding more white
to the base colour.
+ Wood texture is a little too regular, and also I doubt storage shelves
would be made from solid wood! Look up repeat warps in the manual, they
are good for creating veneer effects; also black hole warps can be used
to insert knotholes.
+ Steel texture on posts is a bit shinier than I'd expect from what
looks like an old storage room. Floor texture is also very shiny.
+ I notice *every* space on the shelves is filled; perhaps a few empty
slots (with or without empty jar)
+ It would be nice to be able to see the left and right-hand walls, and
perhaps a door.
+ Some of the jars in the top center seem to be casting shadows onto the
ceiling; where is your light source? Perhaps making a naked light bulb
could be your next measuring project ;)

! Brick texture on far wall is excellent, especially since it is such a
small part of the scene! Details are what make a good picture.
! I seem to see that the bottles are not arranged in perfect straight
lines, but with slight variations; looks natural! I hope you used a
#while loop to place them, I really do...
! Needless to say, the modelling on the diskette case is first-rate. The
metal part should probably be lying flat though.

Maybe you should rotate one of the brains so that it can't be compared
directly.
AFAIK usually these brains don't swim by lie on the ground of the glass?
Maybe you can put some piece of plastic undereath the brain to keep it above
the ettiquette.

The scene is very impressive, the floppy model excellent. I like the
glasses!
Maybe some dust (both, in the atmosphere and the interior).
An idea which just popped up in my mind: what about making the glasses dusty
(very dusty) but wiped somehow in the front so that you can see through
clearly? For example: make all three glasses dusty but wipe the one with the
floppy. The room is more museum-like. AFAIK are museums dusty ;-))
