Hi all
Any comments so far? (bear in mind thta I'm fairly new to this...)
I envisage the final image to be an almost infinite number of these 'cells'
connected together, each populated by a poser character holding a smaller
copy of a cluster of cells each with a poser character holding a smaller
copy yet again...etc
I feel at the moment the cell looks too clean, I want to add rust stains
running down the stone under the window etc but don't know how any ideas?
Thanks
Jim

I quite like it!
Some rust stains'd be good; also maybe some more detail around the
window (sort of "frame" bit moulded into the concrete). Perhaps a bit of
granite in the concrete texture, and some patches of lichen or
something? Don't forget to set up the textures so that each cell has
different patterns of rust/lichen (try: leave cell untextured, then
apply texture over union of all cells on this scale level)
[This next bit is largely an excuse for me to mess about with ASCII art]
In what way will the cells be connected? I assume from the sticky-out
bit that it will be at least:
o-o-o-o-o-o-o
But is there also:
o-o-o-o-o-o-o

o-o-o-o-o-o-o
| | | | | | |
o-o-o-o-o-o-o
or even:

o-o-o-o-o-o-o o

o-o-o-o-o-o-o o o

I was thinking I would build up a library of 'plumbing parts' to
interconnect them. You know sort of T-junctions, s-bends and maybe a stock
cock or two. I'm not yet sure of whether to go with a straight cubic
lattice of cells (or even something a little more complicated like the
atomic structure of silicon???) or go for something a little more random on
the lines of Gilles Trans Pipe macro.
Either way, I still don't know how to apply the rust stains and lichen
etc...

I suggest you try playing with the radial pattern. That way the stains will
seem to lay on the curved surface

This is probably an inefficient way of doing this but...
Take a 3-dimensional array, with all elements set to zero ("no
content"). Have POV randomly set some of them to 1 ("cell sphere"); now
have POV go through each zero element, looking at the blocks around it,
and set them to various numbers representing ("straight pipe"), ("corner
yX"; that is, corner between -y and +x directions), etc depending on the
positioning of the cells around that block. Then tell POV to place all
the relevant objects based on your array contents.

Perhaps a bozo texture? (with extra turb)

Perhaps your only solution for this is image_maps. You can do some trial
and error painting by hand, on try perhaps the "unrolling" technique from
ABX to paint over.
Anyhow, the cell looks good by the moment... waiting to see the whole
scene!

I've just started playing around with Poser and image maps, so I figured I
will created a sphere template using UV-mapper and then paint the rust and
lichens etc onto a transparent background and apply this as the top layer of
a layered texture.

Only a thought, but perhaps you could use a spherical pigment overlayed
on the concrete. Translate the center to just under the window, scale it
so that it becomes an ellipse stretching down from the window. Apply a
color_map from rust in the center to transparent at edges. Apply
frequency, phase and turbulence to taste.
I haven't tested this, it's just what came into my head.
