A friend and I had a private ray tracing competetion this month. These are
the first real pictures either of us has done (besides shiny ball on a plane
type stuff), so be kind with the criticism. Also, both are definite WIPs. We
agreed on a time to stop, and quit mid-key stroke at the designated hour. I
will include here a small description of how each image was created, ala
IRTC. All votes and criticisms are appreciated.

IMAGE A was hand-coded in pov. Blobs, meshes, and CSG were used. The
modeling is somewhat complete, but the texturing is just begun.

IMAGE B was modeled in 3DMax and rendered in brice. Some of the texture maps
for this pic were lost due to last-minute computer problems, so the
texturing is very basic considering what it should have been.

Like I said, these are WIPs and first tries for both of us, but let us know
what you think. Please dont forget to include a vote with your comments.

I will be kind with the criticism, as you asked for.. :o) But there is no
need to be more kind than normally.. It's not hard to find something to
praise in this picture, it's prima work! One would think, picture A was done
with 3dsMAX and B in Pov.. I'm glad to read it's the opposite cause I
especially like picture A.. I would have used WEEKS to create this.. You
see, I'm not the type who just sits down and code anymore.. Now I always
plan.. I start with detailed and well thought over sketches on paper.. So
I'm a little envy to see that you just used a few hours and moreover say
"this is my first POV ... it's not fair.

:o)

Wow I really like A, that is some nice work for hand coding! B is more of a
"clasic" interstellar/galactic ship deign but also very well done, its too
bad you lost the textures for it.

Its a little unfair to compare them since B is so small its hard to see the
detail and A is easy to see, even minus the textures. I likee them both and
I am really impressed!

Really? Maybe it's just me, but each description seems to fit the opposite
image rather than the one you said it describes!

I'm very impressed by image A. You say the meshes were hand-coded... that
thing on the top of it looks like an extremely hard mesh to hand code; i
wish I could do that.

Hell, that thing on top looks like part of a Julia. I agree; if it's
hand-coded, I'm damned impressed.

So it's easy : image A wins !

Seriously, image A reminds me somewhat of Yellow Submarine, except
for the color. It's much more imaginative and promising than image
B. To my eyes, of course.

well i think you both should take an extra week or so, and work only on
texturing. for the modelling i really like A. but B could be good with some
nice texturing.

nice work, both of you.

You are right, but I think we're both resting up for round 2.

Thank you to both of you. The mesh objects include the thing on top, the top
part of the hull, and some pieces of the engine.

Thank you for voting.
