Every year (in Canada, at least) the Cub scouts have a "Kub Kar" rally.

They are given a package that includes a block of pine wood (roughly 3x4x20
cm), some wheels and some nails for use as axles.

It's the boys' task to shape the block into a car (being as creative as they
like), paint it, decal it, attach the wheels, and race it against the other
cars down a sloping track.

My boy described for me what he wanted to build. I visualized it. He loved
it.

(btw, this is my first attempt at radiosity.
I simply copied/pasted the radiosity settings from Tony[B]'s sig.)

Nice, beats the cars I made when I did that thing. I never won... the tracks
were made of wood and one track had this bump that made anyone who had their
car on it lose, and I tended to get my car put onto that track... lotsa fun
though.

That's pretty neat. I remember doing one of those in Cub Scouts. I made my
tear-drop shaped. It was extremely aerodynamic, and won 1st place. Boo-ya.

I competed once and won easily. Here are a few hints:

Use graphite on the wheels, of course.
Sand the seams off of the wheels.
    Glue to "axles" in place.
Put your weight mostly in the front. Your car will wobble a lot less
going down the track.
This is the sure to win idea. Take a soldering iron and place a large
bead of solder on the "axle" between the car and the tire. This will save
friction from the tire resting against the car.
Drill an extra hole in the bottom of the car and bring extra weight and
the soldering iron in case the scale at the event is weighing light.
Depending on the height of the peg which holds the cars at the start of
the race, you may be able to shape the front of the car to rest further up
on the track or take off earlier.

These ideas may seem a little extreme for Cub scouts. But not competing at a
competition is criminal to me.

Pretty cool :))

A very aerodynamic car.
A winner for sure

Best regards.
