Hi there,
on the way to a new scene I made up this "wing" of a fern.
Mostly built by using macros. This wing has 2 x 30 leaves (with a
probability of 10% that is has died) each in a different aging stage.
What do you think?

.. have you tried using a fractal fern algorithm ? ...
I think this one won't appear in close-ups...

What a coincidence! Two days ago I also wanted to model a fern, but I decided to
experiment first with cloths (you can see my video in binaries.animations).
However I was thinking in doing a recursive algorithm.

No. Ferns aren't really fractal or self-similar. The small leaves have no
similarity with the entire wing. Of course, there are some ferns which are
indeed more "fractal-styled" than this one. But not every fern is like this
(as the attached picture shows).

It should, since I started with modelling a single leaf until I was
satisifed with it. Then I built up the wing. Zooming in shouldn't be a
problem then (beside the fact that there are still a lot of things to do at
the "junctions"). I will post a close-up ASAP. But first I have to fix some
other stuff....

as promised: a detail shot from the mentioned fern.
I'm still not satisfied with the texture. needs some more "experimental
fitting".
Anyway, the shapes of the leaves are exactly as designed (beside the
connection of the leaves to the wing).
It's fun to let the thing age or grow just by givin the proper
parameters....

Hm. depends on the fern you want to model. The one I focused on wasn't very
self-similar. See also my answer to Jan!

Maybe. It wasn't planned but might be very interesting. I'll try to make a
movie for a single leaf. We will see if it works.

doesn't look too bad. see in povray.binaries.animations "live and let die"

Comparing to the photo you posted it looks quite realistic, just the
overall shape and the angles of the 'leafs' could be a bit more random.
BTW is it a mesh or did you combine it from other shapes?
