Out of desparation I'm thinking of trying to build one of these. I can't
find a cheap one that's big enough for all the stuff I need to store
someplace. Already have 3 bookcases, a computer desk with hutch, and two
entertainment centers; one of which is only acting as extra shelving. If I
can buy the wood and hardware for less than a pre-made one costs (which I'd
end up having to put together anyway) then I might actually give it a go.
So... here's the renders of it so far, very simplistic. Dimensions are 72"
W x 52" H x 24" D (that's about 183 cm x 132 cm x 61 cm). Ones I've found
are always less in width, like 50-something inches. I figure if I can't get
one built for less than $150 I might as well buy a ready-made kind even if
it's particle board instead of solid wood.
Oh, and pay no attention to that computer notebook, it's only two
superellipsoids with image maps.

Nice design. Couldn't get close to building it for $150 though. Besides, It
would weigh a ton!

Hate to say it but I believe you're right :-) There's some pretty nice
desk/hutch combos I've now found online at for $130 to $475, but still
nothing equal in capacity. Notice mine here has 24" deep shelves, not easy
to reach things but good for packing stuff away.
The boards are a mere half inch thick but the total volume is something like
5 and 1/3 cubic feet of wood, which is to say a 5.3' x 1' x 1' post.
Depends on the type of wood but I was thinking kiln-dried pine. Maybe 25
pounds per cubic foot? I don't really know, I only build things like sheds,
decks, carports, etc. and never weighed anything or used kiln-dried (indoor)
wood before. I do know the weight can vary a great deal though.
I'll check into what particle board would cost. But as I already know (only
two bookcases are hardwoods) the stuff can be awfully flimsy.

After looking at all the "computer desks" in the stores, and not finding
*one* that suits the way I work, I *really* like yours.
It seems to me that this type of design is ideal for modularity. That is,
build it in six pieces and fasten them together. If you need to move it,
unfasten them and move it in parts. Although it makes the whole thing a
little heavier, the individual pieces should be easily manageable.
I've helped a lot of friends move to and from homes and apartments, and we
*love* things that come apart and go back together.

Even though it's extremely plain and boxy? :-) Glad you do anyhow.

It could make good sense to at least have the hutch separate from the desk
part, it would be screwed together and not nailed anyhow as my plan goes.
I've moved things like a refrigerator, washing machine, 27" TV, large couch,
etc. by myself and it doesn't worry me too much. Just more difficult when
it comes to doorways and steps.
The overall size of this thing would certainly be more effort to move
because of bulk, being somewhat larger than my refrigerator which was not as
fragile as this kind of desk is. Something to consider for sure.
Been looking throughout all my files for a office chair I rendered long ago
and no luck finding it yet. Kind of bewildering going through POV files
from a couple years ago. Guess many of you have gone through that trouble.
I can't even locate it based on a search including text inside the files.
Chair, seat, office... nothing locates it. :-(
