Well, I'm just a total newbie to the newsgroups, and I thought:
Hey, why not give it a try?

So here's an image a just created and which took some time to trace. I
like it,
since it is made with POV-Ray 3.1g (no beta downloaded yet) and does NOT

use radiosity. Instead, I simulated hemisphere-lighting using some
area-lights
(based on an idea from Roy Schulz which can be found at
http://roy.gmxhome.de/lighting.htm) and placing fading lights in the
glass-spheres
to have them "reflect" light in their color. I think it looks kinda
neat.
And, I also have to admit, that the CSG-Object was also inspired by the
lighting-
technique from Roy. It was just a first try on applying that technique.

Let's here some comments... ;)

Wow. You managed to fake even the artifacts of real global illumination!

Good choice!
Welcome to the POV-Ray newsgroups! :)

Not quite like radiosity, but still very good!
And I've always been under the opinion that radiosity is not a must for a
render...

Me too. But if those spheres had not been transparent, the trick wouldn't
have worked, would it?

Anyway, it's a very nice image! I look forward to see more of your work...

Well, I could have put "shadowless" on the light_source. Since they aren't
meant to
actually shed shadows, it wouldn't be that bad, and another one is that the
distance
they should illuminate is rather small.

Thanks.
The same applies to your work...

Looks closer to actual radiosity than I was expecting! :) However, I
don't see it as a replacement; I should think real radiosity is more
efficient, and definitely more versatile. I've been playing with it a
bit in 3.5 beta and I think it's become more user-friendly. :D

How long did it take to render?

It does look good, but i think appropriate radiosity settings would not be
slower and more physically correct.

Somewhat around 2 hours on a 500 MHZ 128 MB RAM

You're right, it's neither faster nor correct. But it gives a greater artistic
flexibility, I
think.

Nice image. Good color. It induces a restful mood.
Post source?
