Hi!
After some time, I'm working on this scene - a fantasy laboratory of one of
my characters in a pbm-game. Ignore the missing background, missing AA and
the jpeg-artefacts, please.
What I can't get right are the crystal and the swords blade, which is
supposed to be made out of such crystal. The material is described (by the
gamemaster) as blue crystal and while I'm able to image how it should look
like, I can't achieve the effect I want to. The swords blade is not that far
away - I used emitting media to get the blue touch. But this does not work
for the raw crystal at the right, which is to dark whatever I try.
Has anybody some "magic crystal"-material and is willing to share it with
me?
Comments are as always welcome!

Looks to me that you might have some "max_gradient" problems in the raw
crystal and the mirror or magnifying glass...

No, I don't think so. Um, maybe in the magnifying glass, but I think that
it's only reflecting the all to dark raw crystal. Both work okay in other
context ( or with the crystal moved a bit away). Since rays from the camera
don't have to pass through one of the objects to get to the other, I could
not imagine why max_gradient should be a problem, Note also, that both
surfaces are not all black (at least not on my monitor - you might have to
increase the gamma on yours) - don't sound like max_gradient for me.
I'll test it anyway...

BTW: You meant max_trace_level, didn't you?

Yes, thank you, I did. Both the crystal and the glass are flat black on
my screen.

Is it transparent crystal you want? I'd imagine something like this...
texture {
pigment {
rgbft <.4,.4,1,.8,.3>
}
finish {
specular .5
// roughness maybe... i dunno
// maybe some sort of slight reflection
}
// maybe add some sort of normal for the appearance of cracks or
something
}
interior {
ior 1.5 // or so
media {
scattering {
1,
<.8,.8,1> // multiply by a constant to make it denser or thinner
as necessary
}
}
}
I guess I'd start out with something like that, and then tweak it as
necessary. That's what "blue crystal" makes me think.

Oh, that IS this gamma-problem again. It seems, I'm just not able to get it
right. My fault.

Okay, this proves that I'm not a total fool :-) It's quite the same as my
code, just add some variable reflection (which I inherited from glass.inc)
and color fading and you get pretty much my code. Dropping the reflection
helps a bit, 'cause it shows some of the blue color of the book behind the
crystal.
It's just that yours, too, is quite to dark in my scene. I think it's the
refraction caused by the ior, and that would make it natural. Nonetheless
it's not that artistic to have some charcoal in one of the corners of your
scene and without the ior there is not much left of the object at all ;-)
I'll have to experiment some more and perhaps I'll position the crystal at
another position to allow a deeper look inside it.
Thanks for your help!
