  Subsurface scattering with Poser, first try [20 KB] (Message 1 to 8 of 8)

I had to try it, after all the nice stuff done lately.
The pic below use a transparent image map over an interior media derived
from Kiri's Kivisalo glass of milk.
The result is, well, interesting.
The skin's surface is like it should be, sort of exquisite, but the rest is
problematic with the inner parts (eyeballs, tongue, teeth) visible and the
eyes projecting shadows within the body (no_shadow fixes that but causes
other problems). Of course, if the mesh didn't have these useless inner
folds it would look better, so I can blame Poser.
It gives a good idea of what a real implementation of subsurface scattering
would be, though.

How would it look if you used a second mesh that was just a little

an opaque "bone white", and try to simulate the skull.

On the other hand, some versions of Poser can actually make skeletons.
Perhaps you could try to insert a true skull inside this head? It
might not be pretty, but it might be pretty interesting. :)

I was just coming back to suggest this very thing. When making my candle, it
occured to me that temperature varies the transluscency/transparency of the
wax, and that to accurately represent it, I would have to use a density that
would simulate this phenomena (spherical did the trick). So Gilles, what I
was going to say to you is that if you want this thing to work you have to
be realistic. Put some filling in that model, and things should look better.

I tried this a few days ago and ran into the same problem with the eyes and
mouth. Anyone notice that the render of the face in the BSSRDF paper only
shows the lower part of the face? Makes you wonder...

This model was created using patches and I used these settings for the head.

texture {
    pigment { color rgbf <.85, 0.7, 0.55, 1> }
    finish

     ambient 0
     phong .2
     phong_size 5
     brilliance 1
     reflection 0
     }
  }

interior { ior 1
media {
scattering {1, rgb <.85, 0.75, 0.6> extinction .5}
intervals 5
 samples 10
 method 3
 jitter .1
}
}

The extinction value should probably be close to 1
and density high to keep the material opaque. I think
that only the outer 5-10 mm needs to be "active". Radiosity
and photons may help too.

Hey! I tried this too - also inspired by Kari's milk. Had the same problems
you've hit (needless to say your colouring is better).

I was thinking the same thing when I first saw the subsurface scattering
website, that a skin texture would need to be a media "shell" on top of an
opaque model. I really think this may be worth checking out. Can someone
please post Kari's original milk material? I may actually get some use out
of that moldy copy of Poser 4...
