someone please theorize where that ring of light is coming from below? I
haven't been able to get rid of it. Thanks!

Nice image. Like I remember from my candle days.
I hate to say it, but that ring looks natural to me.

Very good! The ring does not look bad on a candle, but I think it is
an artifact. I get it some times in CSG with radiosity.

I'd suggest pushing the candel slightly into the floor.
Try putting a box right next to the candel and you may see the
same level of brightness on the box as you're seeing at the bottom
of the candel.

Hate to say this, but it took looking at the image at work to
even see the light ring at the bottom. Dont know how I missed it befor.

Place a thin cylinder that is slightly smaller that the outer surface of the
candle, near the bottom.
