Here's a little image, put together (and rendered) in under an hour -
modelled in Rhino,
textured, lighted and placed in Moray and then of course rendered in 3.5 -
comments welcome. I'm thinking on playing with the exported code directly
in 3.5 - any recommendations on using any of 3.5's new features to
enhance/have fun with this image.
Rendered in 17m with a little focal blur and radiosity on a Athlon 1333,
textures: floor my own and chess a modification from a moray library tex

If you put two or three more peices in there, maybe a bishop and a couple of
pawns or something, and had some of them horizontal as if they had been
knocked over, and then gave it some sort of background to replace the
infinite plane (such as a corner under a bed somewhere, or some little nook
where things are likely to get lost), I think it'd be really cool.
It looks really good already.

Yeah, that's something to think about - without putting in much work (ie no
more modelling), I did the included image, which I must admit was heavily
touched up, but came out quite nice I think.
