It is possible to create pretty nice polyhedra using isosurfaces and
sigmoind functions.
I will post source to pov.binaries.scene_files.
Attached are some examples of dodcahedral symmetry applied.
Anyway, the source is heavily commented, hope its comprehendable.

All images were created from the same source file but differ in the
threshold value (of the iso-surface)
isoDodca35 also differd of the rest both in camera position and in the
"contained_by" argument (its simply bigger than the rest)
the source posted will render isoDodca15.jpg (actually .bmp)

Would be glad to hear your comments

I have been playing around with your code and it reminds me of my homework
:P Very impressive though. How hard is it to adapt the isosurface for
polyhedra of different numbers of sides other then 12? You have to define
that number of planes at the right angles but does this sigmoid function
change any?

Thank you fo ryour comments.
No need to change the sigmoid, only define the planes' functions
It will do. You will probably, however, need to play around with the
constants and iso-surface parameters to
perfect the image.
an octaheder or a cube can be quite easily assembled (thier functions are
simple)
in icosaheder and a tetraheder would be a bit more complicated
Good luck
