Had to solve the old "how do you scan a can-label on a flat-bed scanner when the
label won't come off" for this one.... (roll it).

Me neither.
I remember seeing a hand scanner somewhere. You roll it along the surface you
are scanning. Might work if it's small enough.

The image map seems to be a bit too dark, or is the can just very old (the
shiny metall say's it isn't)?

?
Well, it was a bit problematic, but as you can see, I solved it (by rolling the
can along the glass in time with the scanner head). A bit distorted in places,
but workable...

Yess, it's very nice.
Now it looks like a can in the dessert should ;)

Heh - well, I guess it's about the only place someone might bring themselves to
actually eating the contents.
I'm curious as to what sort of market research went into this one - did anyone
actually say that what they really needed in life was omellete, chips and beans
in a can? I may just have to open it one of these days....

Is this what they mean when they make fun of British cooking?

Not only was your solution clever, but it appears you have a steady hand. :)
While I like all three of these items, I would never have considered canning
the chips or the omelet, nor would I have ever imagined this particular
combination of items for a single meal. I'm with you. EEEWWWW!

It's possible to purchase special equipment to perform this operation.
For a look at how the pros do this, look at the following links to
"roll-out" camera technology, also known as peripheral photography:
http://www.digital-photography.org/NMHtml_digital/rollout_gateway_Maya_vases.html
http://www.digital-photography.org/html/Better_Light_Dicomed_Pano.html
http://www.maya-art-books.org/html/rollout.html
...and a few unusual photos of people taken with similar technology:

http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/bruce.jpg
I'm just surprised that no one makes an attachment for a flat-bed
scanner which enables scanning cylindrical objects. It would be fairly
simple for a scanner manufacturer to do this.
Later,
Glen
