Took me 5 minutes to define, and some 15 minutes to render. I have a
question, though: how can I get my photons to interact with the cells
pattern?

Lovely stones, but IMHO way too much focal blur!  I would like to see 
the stones in the back also... :)

Could you try adding "variance 1/10000" to the camera?

Use more photons.  The low number of photons is blurring any pattern that
would show up.
