The mountains are just a height field and the ships are triangle meshes.
Rendered in Pov 3.1, no radiosity settings. Comments? Suggestions? I'm
really not sure what to do with the image next...

If you smoothed the height field and rendered with anti aliasing it'd look
much better.
Maybe raise the camera a bit. The texture on the mountains makes them look
like
very smooth plastic, try dropping the specular/phong value down.
Are the ships attacking the sphere? If so add some weapons to the ships

I added more ships, put a new texture on the sphere in the center
(normal wrinkles), scaled down the ships and rendered the base image for
the heightfield with higher resolution and AA. Should the ships be
equipped with lasers or homing missiles? Other comments/ questions/
suggestions?
It looks much better than it did. The image makes me want to reach for a
joystick :-)
The heightfield still looks a little blocky, especially on the left side.
You might want to open it up in a paint program and do a soften filter on
it.
