I don't know for the painting, but as far as I remember Venice, the 
water isn't that clear, I don't think you would be able to see three 
steps of the stairs into the water and it even looks like we see the bottom.
The white bar of the cathedral's stairs seems strange, but I suppose it 
a saturation due to the Sun on a white surface.
