This image shows some of my latest experiments with creating wood objects
with isosurfaces.

The grass is made with makegrass, the flowers with a custom macro. Focal
blur is post processed.

I am still struggling with the bark finish - it does not appear very
realistic but i am not sure if it's mainly the finish or the surface
structure.

That's just simply amazing!

The grass is perfect, and the stump looks incredible, though I'll agree that
I think the finish on the bark seems just a little bit off. But the bark
itself is amazing! I hope you'll give us the code...

Render time?

Very realistic.

I think it's the color. Try something closer to grey, rather than brown.
Look at a real tree to copy.

The colors are from real trees - i don't think it's too saturated
(although a lot of trees are more grayish of course) but bark has some
pretty complicated reflectivity properties and the geometry mostly is
quite tricky as well (often there is a layered structure leading to pretty
flat and shiny 'plateaus' between rougher parts).

Beautiful job. The saturation of the color is what jumped out for me
too. It's not impossible, but it stretches believability.
