This is my very first - albeit not so seriously meant, the whole
composition is way too simple - contribution to the IRTC. I
modelled this mathematical co-processor from the real thing, using a
slide caliper (you've been raytracing too much when you
own a slide caliper - and use it!). The printing on top of the upper
ceramic die is an ordinary image_map, I just scanned the
processor... but there MUST be a way to do this purely procedurally,
REAL povers shun image_maps!

Yes, I had to re-scale everything by factor 1,000... too bad that
anything smaller than about 0.001 isn't rendered properly,
neither with the Windows nor with the Linux version. Is there (optional)
higher floating point accuracy planned in future
versions of PoV-Ray? Would be a thrilling idea to render a whole
universe with galaxies and atoms to match...

I do failure analysis as part of a process development team where these
ceramic packages were being made.

The pins have more of a rounded slope where the thin cylinder hits the base.

Such as in the new picture attached here? There is still something strange about
the pins - why does the soldering not blend smoothly with the pin rod, although
I used the same texture and also merge instead of union?

The connecting curve has to be C1 (continuous derivative), and the texture
declared for the union, not for each part separately

POV has a problem with the shading of concave surfaces. I have pointed 
it out in connection with another thread, see
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/27303/?mtop=193345&moff=10
but nobody else seemed to care.

C1? Never heard of that... but even when I model the soldering in simple CSG
(torus cut from cylinder), I still get that
strange finish shift, the soldering is much shinier than the pin rod!

Doesn't look that way to me, just looks like they're reflecting 
different things. There seems to be a bit of a highlight causing the 
solder to be a bit lighter, but since the normal of the pin is 
different, it doesn't catch the highlight, but in-stead, just above the 
solder it reflects the gold pad on the chip, then a little higher up you 
get the black chip packaging, then higher up still you get a reflection 
of some lighter colored texture not directly visible, a background or 
floor I'm guessing.
