As said this morning I've put my pocket knife in the balcony scene from 
scenes/advanced/balcony that comes with POV-Ray.

This time I used T_Chrome_1C from metals.inc for the blades and the cork 
screw. But unfortunately the ceiling above the table is mostly dark. 
That's why it looks so odd.

I also think we expect the metallic reflection in a rendering to look 
like the faked chrome surfaces in an airbrush image. There you have 
always nice and interesting reflections that help to recognize the shape 
of the object. But in Real Life (TM) you nearly never have such 
environments. Maybe an animation can show, that's the reflection of the 
blades are o.k.

Thanks. It's a sphere_sweep. I don't know why the spheres came out in 
this scene. I didn't touch the code for the cork screw...  :-(

I don't think it looks odd. Well the shadows are a bit sharp but we aren't
concerned with those right now eh? :D

There is enough reflection for the main blade combined with the lower lighting
angle to show its ok already. This would seem to suggest something as simple as
a couple of boxes with blurred image_maps, strategically placed off camera, to
simulate a more realistic environment, would be enough to break up the 'flat'
appearance in your original scene.

In spite of the funny thing that happened with the corkscrew, I'm liking the
attention to detail you've given to the modeling, even on the backside.

Hmmm, I'll give it a try...

Thanks. I had to do it on such a detail level, because I didn't know in 
wich position it will be set in the final render. On the other hand I 
wanted to release it to the public anyway and so it was worth the effort.

Interesting, i never rendered such a closeup of that scene.  The quilted
normal from the table cloth really does not look very good at short
distance... ;-)

Is that glass the original one?

Have you tried the texture from the metal box in the original version?

Yes, it is. The whole scene is untouched. I only included my knife and 
changed the camera settings. It was a bit hard for me because normaly I 
use the left handed coordinate system...

Yeep, it improved allot :-D. Can I use this texture in the future for my 
knife?

Of course. It's a really simple texture so it's would not even make sense
to claim copyright for a few numbers...

But before anyone jumps to the wrong conclusions, the sample scenes in
general are not free to be used in own work.
