Modelled in sPatch. The grapes have material descriptions which combine
surface textures (bozo, dents , and gradient) and interior media (
radial density with turbulence). With +a0.1 and two 4x4 area lights,
render took 4.5 hours on a Athlon 2000+

It definitely holds some level of realism, but they don't look very
inviting; I wouldn't want to eat them. Maybe it's their color? Not sure.

Not quite there yet but it's looking impressive.

I think they maybe look a bit too brown to me, too much like acorns rather
than grapes, and the white patches look asthough they've been painted on
with a brush, can you get the white mold/dew patches to fade towards the
edges or something like that.

Keep us posted.

That's an impressive image, somehow reminds my of some brazil renderings.
However I do agree with the others that its not quite there yet. While the
shape looks right the texture is more reminiscent of a plum rather than
grapes. In my experience most varieties of grapes, even red ones are
slightly to very translucent. If you could simulate this, not an easy task I
know, your image would look stunning!

Very nice.

As others said, there is still something in them that makes then
CGish... One thing might be the highlights that look like ray-traced
ones. Making them less regular and propably doing them with blurred
reflection could help, but also increase render time.

Another thing is the white/grey marks on grapes: I think they're shape
is not very natural, they look like straight from bozo.

Great looking render. If I might make a suggestion, I think you should edit
the textures such that the specular is not uniform across the grape.... the
grey areas should be much duller I think.

I wish POV had a specular_map...

Yes, I think you've put your finger on in.

Yes, I agree. I was varying that quite a bit and intend to work with it some
more. I think the grapes I was using as a model, were shown to their least
translucent as they sat on top of my monitor. I think they got denser as they
got older too.

Hey Jim, youre off to an amazing start with these! To have them look more
like real grapes though, I think you need to simulate subsurface scattering
much more strongly (I take it thats what you referred to when you said you
used media). Also, the vine needs to be darkened, and dirtied up some more,
with perhaps darker brown, and some light brown/green splotches near the
knots. Keep working on it, youre doing just fine!
