Looks promising. I wonder if placing the entire scene in a transparent box
and using fade_power would result in a faster render. This would mean media
containers around all of the lights, of course.

Media containers around things looks funky when you're using
fog. I know, I tried. Besides, it wouldn't get the ambient
background glows/shadowcasts, which if I got rid of those it
would speed a whole heck of a lot...

Anyway it looks great! :o) I look forward to the result! It's too early to
say if it's equally beautiful, but it will be a big step forward compared to
the first orca image. Did you get the render time down with unions?
