Well, what I am trying to do, is to create a world
within a glass bowl. It's lit by a desklight that will
later be attached to the base (also not modelled
yet), with cable and switch and all that.

This is just a general image, I'm tweaking the
patterns for the heightfield's function, the slopemaps
for the heightfield's texturing, the media of the "ocean"
(as well as the normal on the surface ect),
the height of the mountains... Well, a WIP, really!

I am already thinking about adding clouds (which should
cast scattering type of shadows in the final version),
some trees placed with the trace-macro, perhaps a few houses
(though I'm thinking about scale: they might look too big),
a few ships on the sea?

Well, comments, ideas, suggestions, all are welcome, even
criticism! I've got lots of ideas already tucked in my head,
above all, I need suggestions for techniques and tricks to use.

Thanks in advance!

Tim

Nice idea! I especially like the green 'Algae/seaweed?' base of your
mountain. I hope I'm not being rude here and it's a small forest?! ;)

Carry on with it, it shows great promise for an excellent image. There's
so much you could add to this.... Whales, dolphins, a ship, possibly the sun
somewhere, or stars and moonlight....

...and there are 35 days to go! :^)) <-- ( ...happy that there are that
many... ;)

This may sound rather neanderthalic, but is there a function/parameter that
limits the "water" so that it pushes right up against the sphere but not
through it? Basically, what I'm asking is how you fill an object with a flat
liquid. (Think of a wine glass with wine in it)...

I'd make the glass bowl thicker, but it's just a suggestion.
Looks fine.

Bye.

It will become a small forest... (yeah, I got the joke!)

Thanks. I did want to create a starfield on the left, and a sunny side on the
right side, but I'll look into that later, when I've finished the clouds with
scattering media to an extent that makes it possible to judge if that
day-night-gradient
is really a good idea...

Not for me. On the 18. I've got to do a seminar for my civil service, and it
goes on
till the first of march! No computers there, so I've haven't got that much time.
But
even if I don't enter the IRTC, I'll finish the image, I personally like the
idea very
much...

It's rather simple, but by no means neanderthalic (they're extinct, you know,
and POV isn't THAT old).
The water is just a little tiny bit smaller than the glassbowl sphere, thus we
have no coincident surfaces...
But do note that the ocean is made of two parts: the "volume" and the "surface".
If I'd create only one object and have both get reflecting-finishes, the sides
of the ocean would reflect too, which I didn't want. Also, normals are
only applied to the surface (a disc, by the way), so that where ocean and
glassbowl
touch, no waves are rippling...

I will. The glassbowl itself is yet a placeholder (to actually see the
limits
of the earth inside).

Damn RL!! ;) I'm sure you'll get to finish it in time, keep plodding
on....

The water material is really good, you should however (in my opinion)
make your glass sphere more realistic by cutting out a slightly smaller
sphere from the inside so that the walls have some thickness. Also your
terrain, make it a bit more realistic. Look at some of those Chinese cork
houses in glass spheres for some examples if you'll make any houses and
suck. A great idea.

Thanks for the suggestion, though many have been taken care of before your
post. If you want to, have a look at my homepage. You'll find a section
entitled "Major WIP", where I'll post the most recent images I'm creating.
Right
now, I'm focussing on this one, so there aren't many WIPs... ;)

(every POVer knows that you don't focus entirely on one scene)
