Nothing fancy here, just a couple chunks of quartz. Could probably have
used more photons, but no matter.

Future improvements, assuming I make any, might include milkiness and
cracks/broken ends...

Right. My comment would be that I've never seen quarts that clear.
What is the IOR? Nice image anyway.

IOR 1.55.

I have a rather nice piece of quartz that I did some testing/eyeballing
with and it really is that glassy. Of course, the quartz in the
rendering is also an unusually perfect specimen; most quartz seems to be
hazier, or cracked, or broken off at the point end, or with little air
bubbles, or what have you.

I have seen quartz very close to being this perfect myself in a lapaderist
(sp?) shop. for a 1 inch by .5 inch by .5 inch specimen costs like 2-3
hundred US dollars due to the rarity of such fine specimens.... usually one
ounce per 5 tons of quartz for something this pure

I've got a quartz crystal here that looks just like that, it's just as clear,
and as you say mine has some chipped edges. On close inspection in the light it
has some small patches of milkiness. If I had a digital camera I'd post a photo.
