Here are some moons made from my new random moon macro.
Credit goes to redbeard and http://www.xenoarch.com/tutorials/moon.html

Just pass it the min and max sizes and optionally any colors you want to use.

BTW what would be the best newsgroup for the source?

verry pretty.
the brown one in the middle of the second row from the top, would be great
as a planet in my current project, thanks for the inspiration.

Looks cool, but I can't really think of a time when you'd be able to see more
than one moon that close. Maybe round a gas giant or something.

That's exactly what I am working on - a gas giant!

They could be a lot more detailed, perhaps isosurfaces, but my goal is to use them as
accents to the overall picture, not subjects. They may need to hold up to a flyby in
an animation, but nothing more.

Also, it's nice to be able to just let the computer to the design work when the moon
is just there for eye candy...

Using values >1 for components of the rgb vectors gives some nice "neon"
moons. Can't think where you'd use these, but...
