Hi all

Not much of an update but I've tried to address the criticisms so far.

Well hopefully there is now some more contrast in the image as I've darkened
the sand a bit.
The objects should now give a sense of direction for the light and I've
scaled down the effect of the normal on the sand.

This took 1hr to render with low quality aa and radiosity (only count of
50), hence the artifacts.

Comments and criticisms more than welcome

Kev

Nice, the darker terrain looks very good.

I wonder if the hands would look better if they were not reflective. With
the very smooth environment, the reflection does not look very convincing
IMO.

I like the dunes at the far end of the image; I like the hands, too.
May be the concentric ripple shape surronding the hand could
have been less "regular"... I mean, the sand waves could be done
more randomly, less concentric,... A bit as a spalsh !
But it is my opinion.

I did try a proper skin texture but that didn't look right, I was thinking
of going for stone, then gave up and just went for a nice easy shiny metal.
Would you recommend going back to a stone look, as I think I may.......

Yes, maybe. You could also try glass or something with subsurface
scattering.

I agree with Alex with the ripples regularity, and i would like to add a
question.

How far is your main light source ? If the light source that generates the
hand's shadows is the "sun" of your image, i would say it should be farther
than it actually is.
Anyway, it looks great :-)

I've added some turbulence to the ripples now.

The light source is actually 20000000 units away, and the scale of the hands
is about 5 units tall. I know why you're asking as the shadows seem to point
in different directions, my friend noticed that too, I may have to move the
light around a bit or add parallel.

Thanks.

Glass or subsurfscat, you must be mad ;-) It already renders at less then
4pps with the aa and rad settings turned up, I think I'll go for stone,
seems the more sensible option, at least to get it rendered this year anyway
:-)

I think if you replaced the hands with poles you'll see the shadows do go in the
same direction. It's just because the hands are showing it different directions
that it seems that way.

Wow!

Looks even better than Dali, IMO...

How about water falling out of the sky into the hands...
