Thank you David.
I set the jpeg compression to 80% to save space
and it seems that the high frequencies in the
"texture" suffered a bit from this.

Unfortunatly I can't do iso-surfaces: there
is no Amiga version of MegaPOV*. Otherwise I wouldn't
have pestered you for the larger render. Normally when
I see something cool posted here, I try to recreate it
from scratch.

(how long do these isosurface things take to render, BTW?)

* I suppose I *could* throw MegaPOV on the wintel machine
at work, but I'de rather keep the miggy and the wintel
on the same pov-version, for easy file & render management.

Yes I agree.
Some people in these newsgroups have tried to
convince me to use MegaPov since April (I think).
Two months ago the temptation had grown so great
that I installed it.
And one month ago I "discovered" iso-surfaces.
Now I (almost) admit that I regret that I did
not install MegaPov earlier. ;)

I don't remember the stats, but I see now that
the large one with the wrinkles renders at about
18 pixels per second (at my 100MHz Pentium).
1024 x 768 / 3600 = 218.5 218.5/18 = 12.1
(So by this calculation it takes about 12 hours
to render.)

Eerie...like a slowly cooling mass of molten iron-containing rock being
held in shape by strong gravity and magnetic fields. Looks like it's
been held in this shape, with those odd floating chunks, for a couple
millennia.

But I agree with you - That's the most plausible
explanation for the creation of this stony stuff.

working simultaneously on this, my next irtc entry and my cloth
simulator (no, I don't have a cray, just a 333MHz PII...)

Here are the settings:
* for the bumps I replaced the "wrinkles" term in the isosurface with:
-0.01*(1-2*noise3d (10*x, 10*y, 10*z))
* for the shine: phong or specular 0.5, default phong_size and roughness
