Im not sure i can express all that goes through my mind seeing that
render....

except one question:
    is it a regular grid of spheres, evenly spacedin 3d
    or are they oriented in some special shape

It's a regular evenly spaced 3D-grid.

But I think the distortions, caused by the camera's 
relatively wide angle, makes it a little bit difficult
for the eye to see this.
