Well, the only version I've read is a kids version, but I remember that the
martians
kept grabbing humans and taking them the their CIGAR SHAPED MOTHER SHIP (hint
hint).

I don't remember a mother ship...I think each pod was part of the
landing ship itself, and each ship was about big enough to carry the
pilots, the pod(or a few pods?) and some additional parts to make it a
walking machine. There were a lot of them, but they landed separately in
a fairly widespread area. No mother ship was mentioned...and I don't
think any of them left the planet's surface again after landing, so the
mother ship couldn't have been in orbit.
They seemed more intent on exterminating the life in the area(and
replacing it with Martian life forms like the red weed) than in
conquering or taking prisoners. And I don't recall anything about using
humans as food!?!
I think the only time they grabbed someone is when they first landed and
a crowd formed...someone got too close, got grabbed and pulled into the
crater formed by the landing(and I think he was immediately killed), and
soon after a mirror popped up and the heat ray was used to incinerate a
bunch of people.
Are you sure it was War of the Worlds that you read, and that you aren't
remembering some other book? Of course, it could be my memory, I haven't
read it for a while...I should read it again soon.

As I recall, at least in the original book, the martians came out of what
could be described as artillery shells that were fired at the Earth from
Mars. One end unscrewed to serve as the door and a heat ray was used to
"sanitize" the area before the martians came out.

Sounds like you folks need to read the book. :-)
Okay, there WAS black gas and it was delivered via cannister. There was
no mother ship; each shell was self-contained, and in addition to the
fighting machines the martians built other mechanical devices, although
none was as interesting as the tripod. The martians DID snatch up people
and put them in "baskets" on the back of the tripod; then they drained
the blood and pumped it into their own veins -- a rather Victorian bit
of lurid sensationalism.
Anybody who wants to render one of these things really should read the
original and not just rely on the '53 movie version or the '70's album
cover. It's still a great book.
I now have a functioning heat ray for my own tripod. :-) It glows and
pulses, and it's a really nasty green color. I'm rendering an animation
of the War Machine with rays which will takle a few days. Then I'll put
a frame or two up on my site and I'll post the heat ray code.
