Hi Everybody,
I am currently working on (woven) cloth texture macros and some
preliminary results are in the attached image. Currently I have
macros for pigments and I am planning to write macros for
normals.
The pigments on the sphere, the box, and the bicubic_patch are
entirely procedural. The weave pattern, colors of threads,
widths of threads and gaps between threads are macro parameters.
I wanted to know a couple of things --
1. Has anyone done this already?
2. Will anybody be interested in using these macros?
Other comments/criticisms are welcome too.

P.S. POV 3.5 documentation says that spherical uv mapping is
"boring". I don't see how :)

It's a good beginning. For me, it's usage depends largely on the speed of
rendering. There are different ways to make POV textures, and some are
slower than others. It's often a matter of experimentation to find the
fastest methods. Are you using functions, warps, or object patterns? Don't
forget any of them.
Usually it's possible to find good looking bitmaps of fabric textures on the
net, but not for every purpose, and some are too small images, and some
costs money. Personally I've never needed a cloth texture but I would be
interested in carpet textures, if they are -highly- realistic.

Hmm. I am not doing carpets though. Don't know how to do them.

Hmm, impressive. It might render nicely fast. Have you looked into object
patterns? They could provide more flexibility for this kind of thing.

Carpets and cloths are almost the same thing. :o) And btw, I'm not aware
of others having done this already.

Yeah, quite fast. In fact I didn't notice the render time at
all :) But the image is not too complicated and the cloth
patterns are just pigments. Once I add normals, it will slow
down the render, I guess.

I can use these. For several years now I've been wanting to model and render one
of the most comfortable 'easy chairs' I've ever sat in. I also did a scene with
a blanket/throw once with an Indian like design my father-in-law made. I've been
thinking of trying it again, with my slightly improved skills. Both projects
could easily benefit from a nice course-weave pattern like this.

Wow! Chair is one of the things on my mind too!
